Teaching: Supporting the process of learning to think in Economics
Teaching: Supporting the process of learning to think in Economics
I believe teaching is not about delivering polished answers or expecting immediate understanding. Economics is fundamentally a way of thinking: a lens for understanding the world, which takes time to build. What I teach is doing economics: helping students apply economic reasoning to their everyday lives and use economic tools to analyze problems that matter to them. Rather than treating economics as abstract theories to memorize, I approach it as a living toolkit students can use from personal choices to global dynamics.
I don't expect students to grasp concepts on the first try. Instead, I design my teaching around the assumption that economic thinking develops gradually, through repeated engagement, productive mistakes, and reflection. I focus on creating a classroom where students fluidly move back and forth between theory and real life -- starting with concrete observations, building toward understanding, then applying that understanding to new situations. My goal is for students to leave habitually thinking like economists.
Quotes from Students
"From the beginning of the semester, TA Hong was very approachable and helpful in clarifying any issues I had with the problem sets. Whenever there were concepts, I struggled to understand, she took the time to walk me through what I was missing and explain the material in a way that helped me grasp it more effectively. She provided guidance without judgment, approaching me in a friendly manner that made me feel comfortable seeking out her assistance. Thanks to TA Hong's patient and clear explanations early on, I was able to resolve my confusions around challenging problems and develop a stronger comprehension of the course material. Her support early in the semester gave me the foundation I needed to understand the key concepts."
